Why Start a Blog?
“No one reads blogs anymore.”
“It’s 2023. You’re late to the party.”
Those are the statements rattling around in my mind as I begin this blog. Today, most people prefer to receive information with a limited word count. To capture attention, even these posts must have an attention-grabbing photo and a provocative title or statement.
So, why start a blog?
Social media has its place. If I want to promote an event at church or offer a quick note of thankfulness, I think social media works well. But, generally, if you want to write something of substance, social media isn’t the place.
Here’s why I’m starting a blog:
After finishing my doctoral degree, I’ve been seeking an avenue to write that is more pastoral than academic. It provides flexibility to share brief thoughts about a variety of subjects rather than dedicate the attention needed to a specific subject that a book would require.
The Lord has blessed me with a unique story that includes both long-term missionary and local pastoral experiences, often providing me with a different perspective.
I want to maintain the discipline of writing. I was blessed with professors and colleagues who challenged me to improve in this area. I need to continue to exercise those muscles, or I will lose them.
I can organize and archive content to make it “searchable” in the future.
Finally, my wonderful wife has asked me to write for years. It’s been almost 25 years since I preached my first sermon. I finally feel confident enough in a few subjects to share my thoughts with others publicly without the fear of speaking theoretically or about subjects where my thoughts needed more time to mature.
So, I’m starting a blog. My goal is to write weekly and to keep each post less than one page in length. Most of the posts will be focused on ministry, book reviews, and family. If you would like to receive a notification when new posts are uploaded, you can find the sign-up at the bottom of the homepage. I pray the Lord will use this blog to encourage others as they seek to follow Him on their own journeys. Thanks for joining me on mine!
